Comments:Ancient Medallion is a gorgeous plant with an abundance of lovely yellow flowers that are very open and show heavy texture, both traits that the more primitive flowers of Ancient Elf lack. Coming from a cross of Ancient Elf, which is one of the foundational base cultivars that my program is founded on, to the tetraploid conversion of Siloam Medallion, Ancient Medallion encompasses many desirable traits, both as a breed and as a garden plant. Ancient Elf as a parent makes this introduction one of my foundational tetraploid introductions. It was important for me to integrate the Siloam Medallion family, and since there was a tetraploid conversion of the foundational plant, it only made sense to just go back to the source. Siloam Medallion and its descendants all show very heavily textured petals and open, flat flowers - both very important traits in the ideal flower phenotype I desire - but they tend to have poor branching and only moderate vigor. My original division of tet. Siloam Medallion was a gift from James Spencer of Tennessee, for which I am very grateful. It proved to be an invaluable breeder in the early phases of my program, producing many important seedlings that I have worked with and that will eventually make it to introduction.
Ancient Medallion is a strong growing plant with a high scape-to-fan ration, and those scapes show nice branching with great bud counts. The plant is very fertile both ways. The foliage is a beautiful deep green, making a nice large mound and is dormant. The plant is beautiful in the landscape and will work very nicely as a back of border planting behind short foreground plants. The deep green foliage makes an excellent backdrop for shorter plants. The display in the landscape is an explosion of yellow clouds that last for several weeks. See the clump pictures below.
