Comments: Magenta Stardust is a plant I have grown now for a long time. Produced in 2013, it went through the last three years of my rust resistance screening program with A+ rating each year, and it shows excellent breeding value for rust resistance. The flower is a rich, bright magenta-pink that often shows a mauve-rose flush toward the center of the petal with lighter edges and lighter sepals. The midribs are slightly raised, and I have gotten pleated seedlings with it when crossed to fully pleated partners. The seedlings tend to be richly colored, with strong color clarity, just like in Magenta Stardust.
The plant is semi-evergreen, and is hardy here in zone 6, but does emerge fairly early and usually shows some foliage damage here from late freezes. I am releasing it now because of the high rust resistance and breeding value for the trait so that it can benefit growers and breeders in warmer zones, where rust is a yearly consideration. I have produced a number of excellent seedlings from Magenta Stardust, and as it does carry foliage dormancy recessively, mated to hard dormants, I have retained several fully dormant seedling from it. Beautiful in the garden and very useful in breeding programs.
